UK’s First LNAT Preparation Guide to Boost Fairness in New Compulsory University Admissions Tests

UK (PRWEB) August 24, 2004

Cataga Admissions Test Prep, the UK test preparation company, has published the first preparatory guide for the newly introduced UK University Admissions Tests in an attempt to make the tests as fair as possible by giving state school students the opportunity to prepare just as well as their private school counterparts. “Crack the LNAT” is the product of collaboration of leading UK and US education experts, academics and Oxbridge graduates. It is designed to provide high-quality, inexpensive preparation advice and practice tests for the National Admissions Tests for Law (LNAT), which is now compulsory for entry to nine top UK universities, including Oxford and Cambridge.

The new Biomedical Sciences Admissions Test (BMAT) and the National Admissions Test for Law (LNAT) have been introduced by the country’s top universities, including Cambridge and Oxford, as an additional selection tool for undergraduate applications. The tests have been launched amidst a heated debate about A-level result inflation and persistent performance gaps between private and state school students.

The National Admissions Tests are modelled on the example of the SAT –previously known as the Scholastic Aptitude Test – which has been used by US universities for decades. The tests will be held across the UK in early November 2004. They comprise of a multiple-choice section to assess students’ logic skills and an essay section to test writing proficiency and reasoning abilities.

The American SAT has often been criticized for emphasizing class and race differences because students with access to high-quality college consultants or to the services of the $ 250m SAT preparation industry can notably improve their scores by learning how to deal with the different sections. Critics of the UK National Admissons Tests have already voiced fears that the spread of US-style commercial coaching will reinforce the advantage of pupils from affluent backgrounds.

Cataga has stepped into what is still a niche market in the UK and published an inexpensive LNAT preparation guide, “Crack the LNAT”, which can be downloaded from http://www.cataga.co.uk and which offers insight into the National Admissions Test for Law. Emphasising that the LNAT is a learnable test, the authors encourage students to prepare well and, above all, practise. The book aims to familiarize students with the common question types and answering methods of the multiple choice section and to teach supreme essay-writing skills.

Selwyn Lim, the company’s director, believes that the LNAT will be very unforgiving on students who do not prepare. “Admission tests are inherently ‘unfair’. Students who have the opportunity to prepare well will always score better than students who don’t. The only tests impervious to preparation are genetic evaluations – not a pleasant thought! I am an advocate of the idea that human beings can make progress through effort.”

But he also stresses that high-quality test preparation should under no circumstances depend on financial affluence. “We believe that, by offering high-quality, affordable test preparation, we are contributing to making the new National Admissions Tests as fair as possible.”

“Crack the LNAT” is the result of a collaborative effort between education experts in the UK and the US. The Cataga team comprises of high-profile academics and graduates, mostly with 1st class honours degrees from Oxbridge colleges in subjects such as Law, PPE and Medicine. Additional contributions have been made by students who have obtained maximum scores in the American SATs.

Cataga also offers test preparation courses for both LNAT and BMAT. The preparation book for the BMAT, the BioMedical Admissions Test, is to be published in 2005.
