The Greater Green Bay YMCA Reminds Kids and Adults to Practice Water Safety

Green Bay, WI (PRWEB) August 31, 2011

Wrapping up the summer season does not mean that time with one of our favorite forms of recreation is reduced! Fall time can sometimes mean more swimming time for many kids and adults, as they venture indoors to the pools to enjoy their favorite spots to swim, play and create lasting memories. The Greater Green Bay YMCA reminds the Green Bay community to keep safety first when in or around the water. With this in mind, the Y offers swim programs that teach water safety skills and give kids and adults the chance to explore the many health benefits of swimming, a valuable life-long skill.

“The Y encourages all kids and adults to learn how to swim. It’s never too late. Basic swimming skills and water safety practices save lives every day,” said Renee Chandler, Aquatics Director at the Greater Green Bay YMCA. “It’s important to make sure children and adults are confident in the water to ensure they have a fun and safe experience.”

Swimming is a fun and enjoyable activity for children and adults alike, and it has many health benefits, as it’s a fun and easy way to stay physically active and improve strength, flexibility and stamina. The Greater Green Bay YMCA offers a variety of programs for children and adults including swimming lessons, private swim lessons, lifeguard courses, and family swim.

Back-to-school-time, means the start up of the Green Bay Y’s Swim Smart program. Swim Smart is a YMCA, Community and School Partnership. It is a donation-funded, volunteer-led swim safety and education program that provides second graders from at-risk schools a hands-on water safety experience. Swim Smart gives children the skills and knowledge necessary to recognize and prevent aquatic emergencies. The goal is to help children make smart decisions in and around water areas. At the same time kids learn about water safety and stroke development, within the swim curriculum they are also learning the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

When in and around water, the Greater Green Bay YMCA recommends the following safety precautions for children and adults:

Only swim when and where there is lifeguard on duty; never swim alone.
Adults should constantly watch children in and near the water. If multiple adults are in the vicinity, designate a “water watcher” so everyone knows who is “on duty.”
Inexperienced swimmers should take precaution and wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (PFD) when in, on or around the water.
Children who are beginners should stay within arm’s reach of an adult in the water.

As a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works to ensure everyone has an opportunity to learn, grow and thrive. This philosophy drives the Greater Green Bay YMCA’s commitment to help children and adults experience the joy and benefits of swimming. The Y mission is at work through the Swim Smart program, providing at-risk second grade students a program at no cost, even transportation from the schools is sometimes covered by donations or is grant-funded.
