<p> The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) will present a 3D imaging technologies lineup of briefings, workshops, presentations and displays at RAPID 2012 Conference &amp; Exposition May 23-24 in Atlanta in response to the growing number of manufacturing engineers looking for solutions that accelerate product design and production.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>3D imaging equipment and software are used for a full range of manufacturing applications including; inspection, quality control, verification, metrology and measurement. When combined with additive manufacturing, 3D imaging technologies can streamline the product design and inspection process, dramatically reducing the time it takes to bring new products to market.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“3D imaging is often the first step of the 3D printing process, especially when it comes to physical objects that need to be virtualized,” says Michael Raphael of Direct Dimensions. “3D imaging provides the solutions for capturing reality.”</p>

<p>3D imaging tools have evolved and provide automatic functions for analysis of complex geometric inspection of manufactured parts. The latest solutions automate the analysis of CAD-encoded geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and are expected to drive the growth of production inspection and part manufacturability with 3D imaging technology.</p>

<p>The 3D Imaging Event kicks off on Tuesday, May 22 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with an in-depth reverse engineering and 3D data capture workshop where experts from SME’s Rapid Technologies &amp; Additive Manufacturing (RTAM) Community Tech Group will provide a comprehensive introduction to 3D scanning technologies, software and processes, highlighting the differences between data capture technologies with a hands-on demonstration of popular scanning devices. A free one-hour 3D imaging technology overview is offered free to all registered attendees from noon to 1 p.m., May 23 and 24.</p>

<p>“We created the scholarship to help student entrepreneurs have the resources they need to get an education while pursuing their entrepreneurial dreams,” said Brock Blake, Lendio CEO. “It’s exciting to have this many universities on board with a similar vision.”</p>

<p>Some of the colleges and universities helping to support the scholarship are Arizona State University, University of Kansas, University of Nebraska, and the University of Oregon. The scholarship will award one student entrepreneur $  2,500.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“We’ve had more applications than we thought we’d have at this point,” Blake said. “The response has been great, and we’re very happy to get support from colleges all over the country.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Blake started the program because he received a similar scholarship while attending Brigham Young University.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“It allowed me to focus on academics and our startup without the worry of a part-time, low-paying job,” Blake said. “At the end of the day, I hope this scholarship will give future entrepreneurs the edge they need to be successful.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The scholarship is called the Lendio Brock Blake Student Entrepreneur of the Year, which will award $  2,500 every year to a student who has demonstrated excellence in entrepreneurship. It’s open to any college or university student that has started a company or is desirous to start a company while attending school.</p>

<p>To apply, students need to submit a 500-1,000 word essay to scholarship(at)lendio(dot)com. The deadline is July 1, 2012. The essay should cover things like:</p>

<p>       The student’s passion and commitment to being an entrepreneur&#13;<br />
       The challenge of juggling a startup with academics&#13;<br />
       Why the student wants to be an entrepreneur&#13;<br />
       Current business plans/ideas&#13;<br />
       The motivation behind being a business owner&#13;<br />
       High-level goals in the next 5-10 years&#13;<br />
       What it means to be an entrepreneur

<p>The unveiling will take place May 20 at the Art Students League’s Phyllis Harriman Mason Gallery, 215 West 57th Street in New York City. http://www.theartstudentsleague.org A private preview and brunch (suggested donation $  100) will be held from noon to 2:00 pm, followed by a public opening and reception from 2:00pm to 4:00 pm. Prints of the scroll in various formats will be available for purchase at prices ranging from $  100 to $  1,000. </p>

<p>The event is a partnership of The James Jay Dudley Luce Foundation, The Stewardship Report, the Arts Students League, Friends of the United Nations, the Stand Up for Peace Project and Dr. Judy Kuriansky, representing the United Nations accredited NGO, the International Association of Applied Psychology and its Global Kids Connect Project.</p>

<p>In describing the origin of the ten-month art project, Mr. Yoshimoto said, “To combat social amnesia in the internet age, I wanted to create a lasting memorial that would long honor the victims and survivors of the Tohoku earthquake. I wanted to honor the triumph of the human spirit over catastrophic tragedy.”</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The scroll depicts the incredible devastation wrought by the earthquake and tsunami and the human tragedy and heroism of the time. Mr. Yoshimoto did much of the work on the scroll during several months of residency at the Art Students League’s Vytlacil Campus Artist-in-Residence program in Sparkill, New York.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“I am grateful that the League and the Vytlacil Artist-in-Residence program could serve as a vehicle for Jave Yoshimoto’s goal to create a work commemorating last year’s devastating earthquake,” says League Executive Director Ira Goldberg. “ With the advice of Vytlacil Campus Director, Gary L. Sussman, Jave was able to realize his goal.”</p>

<p>Dr. Kuriansky and her partners in the Global Kids Connect Project recently returned from a mission in the disaster zone in Japan on the anniversary of the 3/11 tsunami/earthquake. Partnering with the Recovery Assistance Center in Miyagi, her team made presentations of music, drawings and healing exercises at several schools and resettlement housing. <p> As awareness and interest in donating and adopting frozen human embryos increases, the questions of “how do or should we tell the children?” start to arise. To address this emerging and growing demographic, the National Embryo Donation Center’s (NEDC) Digital Media Manager, Chris Barrett, collaborated with University of Tennessee child development professor, Dr. Sally B. Hunter, to create a heartwarming children’s book entitled, Training Wheels: How Did I Get Here?, to help parents start the conversation and answer their children’s questions.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>These same questions have been asked by traditionally adopted children for decades and have influenced numerous books that assist in reinforcing an adopted child’s understanding of why they are special and very much loved. Some of these publications provide value to the parents of embryo adopted children but they don’t tell the whole story; that is until now.  </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Training Wheels tells about five year-old Miles and the new bike he gets for his birthday from his special friend, Mike. Miles’ parents explain that Mike’s mom and dad generously donated their remaining embryos and he was born as a result of their loving gift. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>The story is told in a delightful rhyming pattern, using words that are easy for preschoolers to understand and a storyline that will help to satisfy their curiosity about where they came from. Fun and colorful illustrations by Knoxville artist Tyler Garrison saturate the book and enhance its appeal to young children. </p>

<p> With an education system that required English to be taught as the first foreign language for 100% of students between 1982 and 2000, it is not surprising that Norwegians feel very confident in their English language abilities. This schooling certainly was effective in securing the superiority of Norwegian school children in a recent study of English language skills &#8211; the Global English Challenge  earlier this year ranked the English skills of Norwegian school children as second in the world after Denmark. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>However, a look at the English language skills of Norwegian adults implies this high level of proficiency is not retained into adult life. Conducting a study into the English language test scores of over 2500 Norwegian adults, EF found surprising results. The average test result was just a level 10 which corresponds to the lower end of level B2 on the Common European Framework (CEFR) -the guideline used to describe the achievements of learners of foreign languages across Europe. According to the CEFR, this level is termed ‘upper intermediate’ and corresponds to an ability to interact with a degree of fluency. However, to be classed as truly fluent, an individual needs to achieve a level 13 which corresponds to a higher C1 on the CEFR.  EF’s study found that just 5.35% Norwegians achieved this level and could therefore be classified as fluent. It also found that Norwegians’ weakest skill is listening. </p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>These results could be worrying for employers in a country where most jobs requiring a university degree will almost certainly include English fluency as a basic requirement for applicants.  Whilst Norwegians are often good at written English, in a world where verbal communication across borders is becoming increasingly important to forge international relationships and secure competitiveness overseas, listening skills are also vital.  Poor English skills in business could lead to security risks, production inefficiencies and even lost sales.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>According to EF’s Country Manager for Norway, Thomas Astrup, the fact that Norwegians often have good basic English skills after years of English in school could actually be a big part of the problem, Astrup commented: “Norwegians tend to think their English skills are good enough after leaving school and so do not make the effort to build on and retain these skills in their adult lives. This leads to a widening gap between their perceived and their actual proficiency levels.” He continues “businesses need to be aware of this proficiency gap and take steps to protect themselves from any potential negative consequences.”</p>
